Pixar’s latest movie is getting ready for its Disney Plus debut. Inside Out 2 will arrive on Disney’s streaming service on Sept. 25, more than three months after it was initially released in theaters. In those three months, Inside Out 2 became the highest grossing animated movie of all time.
Of course, with any box office list there are sure to be a few details worth noting. For one thing, there’s the delineation between traditional hand-drawn animation — a category The Lion King reigns supreme over — and computer generated animation. And, when you get past the top slot, the records becomes a bit more complicated since the second place movie on the all-time list is Disney’s “live-action” Lion King, a movie that seems like it shouldn’t really count for this list since it’s bizarrely caught between two worlds. And that’s all without mentioning adjusting box office totals for inflation, but since most records don’t worry too much about that, there’s no reason animated movies should be concerned about it either.
Another important note to Inside Out 2’s box office total is that it’s still climbing. Pixar’s latest still has plenty of showings in most major markets and was still in the box office top 15 on the weekend of Sept. 6 to 8.
Regardless, Inside Out 2 has been a massive hit in theaters. Now that it’s about to arrive on Disney Plus, it seems likely it will quickly become one of the platform’s most-streamed movies as well.
