Robert Pattinson loves to play a weirdo, so it’s no surprise that he jumped at the chance to play more than a dozen of them in his new movie Mickey 17. The first trailer for the sci-fi comedy directed by Parasite’s Bong Joon-ho arrived on Tuesday and it’s exactly as strange, funny, and gruesome as we were hoping.
The movie takes place in the future, when humanity has taken to the stars for long journeys into space. But space is a dangerous place for regular people. Enter Pattinson’s character, Mickey Barnes, a man who is cloned over and over again and sent on the kind of horrible, life-threatening missions that no regular person would sign up for. The trailer gives us just a taste of these missions, and the variety of awful ways Mickey dies, but each of them seems weirder and funnier than the last. This keeps going in an endless cycle for Mickey, until one day two of his clones find out they’re alive at the same time — something that was never supposed to happen.
The trailer is more vague on the details of what happens next, but it’s nice to be left with a little bit of mystery. And when the people behind that mystery are one of the best living filmmakers and an actor with a knack for interesting projects, it’s pretty easy to trust them, especially when the first trailer is this weird and fun.
Mickey 17 arrives in theaters on Jan. 17, 2025.
